אקדמיית וינגייט למצוינות בספורט הוקמה במכון וינגייט בשנת 1990 במטרה לאפשר לספורטאים צעירים בעלי כישורים ויכולות ספורטיביות גבוהות לממש את הפוטנציאל הספורטיבי שלהם, להביאם להישגים כבוגרים בתחרויות מטרה בין-לאומיות ולחיזוק נבחרות ישראל בענפי הכדור.
אקדמיית וינגייט למצוינות בספורט פועלת כמערכת גומלין (Eco System) ראשונה במעלה בהיבטים המקצועיים, החינוכיים, המדעיים, הרפואיים והפרא-רפואיים וברמת התשתיות המתקדמות של מכון וינגייט.

אנו במכון וינגייט, עושים זאת בתנאי אימון מיטביים לרבות העמדת מאמנים לאומיים, צוות רפואי ומקצועי ראשון במעלה ומתקני ספורט מתאימים, בשיתוף איגודי הספורט, מנהל הספורט במשרד התרבות והספורט והיחידה לספורט הישגי.
הספורטאים והספורטאיות הצעירים שוהים באקדמיה בתנאי פנימייה מלאים, תוך סנכרון מול מערכת החינוך. כל אחת משכבות הגיל של הספורטאים מלווה 24/7 על ידי צוות חינוכי הנמצא עימם במתקני האקדמיה והמגורים במכון וינגייט.
בשנת הלימודים תשפ"ו, האקדמיה מונה 155 ספורטאים וספורטאיות מ-13 ענפי ספורט:  ג'ודו בנים ובנות, שחייה (כולל מים פתוחים), כדורעף אולמות בנים ובנות, כדורעף חופים, כדורמים בנות, טריאתלון, טניס שולחן, קשתות וסיף אליהם התווספו השנה 4 ענפי אימון חדשים: שחייה אומנותית, אתלטיקה (ריצות בינוניות), התעמלות מכשירים בנים וטיפוס.
